Description: Alabama Power supplies electricity to 1.4 million homes in Southern and Central Alabama. The Foundation supports projects focused on:

  • Improving education.
  • Strengthening communities.
  • Promoting arts and culture.
  • Restoring and enhancing the environment.

  • $40,000 to Alabama Educational Television Foundation in general operating support (2006).
  • $14,500 to Alabama Historical Radio Society in general operating support (2006).
  • $10,000 to Alabama Press Association Journalism Foundation in general operating support (2006).
  • $3,000 to Gulf Coast Public Broadcasting in general operating support (2008).
  • $1,250 to NPR in general operating support (2008).

Fit for public broadcasting: It is a good fit for media serving Central and Southern Alabama, in particular.

Eligibility: The Foundation primarily makes grants in Central and Southern Alabama. Applicants must be tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service code. The Foundation looks for projects that include collaboration among diverse groups; that generate permanent benefit; that can show evidence of sound financial management; that can attract multiple sources of support; and that serve underserved population groups.

Deadline: Grant requests for $50,000 or more are considered quarterly (March, June, September and December) by the board of the foundation. Requests for less than $50,000 are considered by grant review committees every six to eight weeks.

How to apply: Initial approach is by full proposal. The Foundation does not review letters of inquiry.

Giving range: Most grants are below $10,000. A few range as high as $100,000.
