Description: The Foundation was created by Hugh Daniel who launched the Daniel Construction Company of Alabama, which became one of the leading construction companies in the nation. The Foundation supports organizations in the areas of:

  • Civic and Community: improve quality of life in communities, preserve history, and support economic development.
  • Education: promote school readiness, prevent drop-outs, encourage graduation.
  • Health: provide for the uninsured, support research, and build healthier communities.
  • Arts and Culture: support a range of arts organizations, expand access to the arts and educate children about the arts.

Sample grants:

  • $3,000,000 to Mayo Clinic for endowment for division of hematology/oncology (2008).
  • $75,000 to Alabama Public Television in 2007 and $25,000 in 2008.
  • $17,500 to Gulf Coast Public Broadcasting (2007).

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation regularly supports public media that serve Alabama.

Eligibility: Must have 501(c)3 status. All applicants must formally request guidelines, and can only request once within a twelve-month period. The Foundation does not support individuals, events or start-up costs for new organizations.

Deadlines:

  • December 15
  • March 15 (this cycle has closed for 2010)
  • June 15
  • September 15

How to apply: Send a letter or e-mail requesting guidelines to Maria S. Kennedy, Executive Director, at the above address. A request for guidelines must be made each time an organization wishes to apply. Guidelines are only provided once eligibility has been confirmed.

Giving range: Most grants are below $100,000.
