Description: The Foundation was created by Winthrop Rockefeller, former governor of Arkansas. Special focus is placed on reducing poverty in Arkansas. The Foundation is interested in improving the quality of life for the residents of Arkansas and on promoting systemic change.  The Foundation supports projects that benefit Arkansas residents in the areas of:

  • Education
  • Economic Development
  • Economic, Racial, and Social Justice

Sample grants:

  • $250,246 to Arkansas Educational Television Network to produce a 60-minute television program on how people in Helena, Arkansas are working to restore that city's economic and social well-being, together with supplementary educational curriculum material for Arkansas middle and high schools (2005).
  • $115,740 to Ozark Foothills FilmFest, Inc. to expand the T Tauri Film Festival youth filmmaking workshops (2006).
  • $80,000 to New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) to complete post-production and distribution of a documentary entitled Hubert's World, that will promote awareness of how individuals with severe disabilities can live independently (2006).
  • $70,000 to Arkansas Educational Television Network Foundation to support programming related to water resource issues in Arkansas (2007).
  • $62,266 to Arkansas Educational Television Network Foundation for a collaborative planning effort to expand the use and availability of AETN programming to the Spanish-speaking community (2006).
  • $35,664 to Arkansas Educational Television Network Foundation to educate Arkansas citizens, policy makers, nonprofit leaders and students about the quality and level of support the evacuees from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita received from Arkansas communities, nonprofits, and faith-based organizations (2006).

Fit for public broadcasting: There is a good fit for public broadcasting in Arkansas, especially for projects that intersect with the Foundation's program areas. The Foundation seems especially keen on projects that have statewide impact.

Eligibility: Tax-exempt, 501(c)(3), nonprofit organizations working to improve the lives of Arkansans are eligible to apply for funding. Government agencies, schools, colleges, and universities seeking funding that will be specifically earmarked for charitable purposes are also eligible. The Foundation does not support:

  • Individuals.
  • Capital expenditures (construction, major renovations, equipment, or supplies).
  • Operating funds to cover budget shortfalls.
  • Fundraising campaigns.
  • Endowments.
  • Projects that do not directly or significantly impact the state of Arkansas.
  • Religious groups for religious purposes.
