Type of foundation: Community
Types of grants: Project, operating, scholarship.
Description: Driven by the mission to "build community," the Foundation serves the Miami-Dade community. Discretionary grants are made through the Community Grants Program, which is the Foundation's most general grantmaking program. Funding for this program is made available though the Foundation's unrestricted and field of interest funds. The Community Grants Program is designed to honor both the donors' interests and to address significant community issues such as: education, health, human services, arts and culture, environment, economic development, at-risk youth, abused and neglected children, people living with HIV/AIDS, homelessness, social justice, care of animals, heart disease and more.
In addition, the Foundation offers Special Funding Initiatives – partnerships with other local and national funders that address important community issues. These are typically time-limited and have their own sets of guidelines and deadlines. Examples include: Community AIDS Partnership Program, the GLBT Community Projects Fund and the Miracle Loan Program (short-term loans and bridge funds).
Sample grants:
- Approximately $26,000 in 3 grants to the Friends of the North Miami Public Library (2007) (non-advised).
- $15,000 to Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (2007) (non-advised).
- $7,500 to Tigertail Productions, the oldest mid-size presenting and producing organization in South Florida (2007) (non-advised).
- Several grants to Friends of WLRN and to WPBT Channel 2 (donor-advised grants).
Fit for public broadcasting: Most of the media grants identified were made through donor-advised funds. There may be opportunities for public media serving Miami-Dade County to secure Community Grants for projects that converge with the Foundation's focus areas.
Eligibility: Eligible applicants include nonprofit tax-exempt organizations, as defined by the Internal Revenue Code, that serve the residents of Miami-Dade County. The Foundation does not provide grants to individuals, for memberships, fundraising events or memorials. Grants to government agencies are made on a very restricted basis.
Deadline: Community Grants proposals are accepted from October 1 – November 15. Awards are made in February. The grant period is March 1 – December 31 of the award year.
How to apply: New applicants are encouraged to contact the Programs Department staff at 305-371-2711. To be added to the Foundation's mailing list, contact Gianne Ewing-Chow, Senior Program Officer, at the same number.
Organizations interested in applying for a Community Grant should first review the program guidelines [PDF]. Application is by full proposal addressing the questions identified in the program guidelines. Proposals must also include a cover form and budget form, both downloadable online. Proposals should be addressed to Javier Alberto Soto, President, Dade Community Foundation and sent to the address listed above. Proposals may not be submitted by e-mail or fax.
