Description: The Foundation was established to "enrich the quality of life throughout Idaho." Through its competitive and donor-advised funds, the Foundation supports organizations working in areas including, but not limited to:
- Arts and Culture.
- Conservation/Environment.
- Education.
- Emergency Services.
- Health.
- Libraries.
- Public Projects.
- Recreation.
- Social Services.
The Foundation's competitive grants are divided into 3 regional grant cycles: Northern, Eastern, Southwestern. Statewide organizations may apply if they serve counties in the respective region.
A few of the Foundation's donor-advised funds accept competitive proposals. A list of these opportunities is available here.
Sample grants:
- $7,168 to Idaho Educational Public Broadcasting (2008).
- $5,000 to Idaho Educational Public Broadcasting (2008).
- $500 to High Country News (Colorado) (2008).
Fit for public broadcasting: This is a reasonable fit for public broadcasting, focused on providing media content that enhances the quality of life in Idaho.
Eligibility: Eligible organizations must have 501(c)(3) status or be government entities or public education institutions. The Foundation will not support:
- Individuals (other than through its scholarship program).
- Debt-reduction or fund-raising projects.
- Attendance at conferences or seminars.
- Large capital projects or endowments.
- Projects that fund federally or state-mandated programs.
- National organizations (unless the work directly benefits Idaho residents).
Deadline: Each regional grant cycle has its own application window each year:
- Northern Region: November 1 to January 15; grant distribution begins in June.
- Eastern Region: February 1 to April 1; grant distribution begins in September.
- Southwestern Region: May 1 to July 1; grant distribution begins in December.
How to apply: Applicants should review the grant guidelines for regional competitive grants. A sample grant application is available here. Interested organizations can request to be added to the Foundation's newsletter mailing list. The Foundation shares information about upcoming grant cycles, grant award events and related issues in its newsletters. The Foundation also uses its newsletter to solicit proposals for grants. Regional committees of volunteers review these proposals. Final award decisions are made by the Board of Directors.
Giving range: Donor-advised grants vary in size. The regional competitive grants program offers grants of up to $5,000.
