Description: Established in 1967, the Foundation works to improve the quality of life for people living and working in the city of Charlottesville, VA and the surrounding counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson and Orange. Several competitive grant programs are available, supporting work in the areas of youth, education and community services. Of particular note are:
- Community Endowment, which, in 2010, expanded its giving. The Community Endowment offers large grants ($10,000-100,000) and small grants (under $10,000). Proposals in the areas of healthcare, human services, community enrichment, education, arts and culture, the environment or other critical needs are encouraged.
- The Future Fund, which seeks to respond to nonprofits or schools seeking programmatic, capital or capacity-building (improving organization effectiveness) support.

- $100,000 to Link Media, San Francisco, CA for general support for linktv.org (2007).
- $91,000 to Environmental Media Association, Burbank, CA for general support (2008).
- $25,000 to Light House Studio, Charlottesville, VA for continuing support for independent media education center for teenagers who want to make movies with an emphasis on personal expression and local stories (2008).
- $20,000 to Foundation Independent Filmmaker Project, New York, NY for Rosalia Films (2007).
- $12,500 to WVPT Public Television, Harrisonburg, VA for general support (2007).
- $11,500 to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, Charlottesville, VA for general support (2007).
Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation has made eight grants for radio/television/media projects over the past three years, totaling $295,000.
Eligibility: Giving limited to the Charlottesville, Virginia area, including the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Greene, Orange, Louisa, Fluvanna, Buckingham and Nelson east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. No grants to individuals, or for endowments, deficit reduction, fundraising events, or annual appeals of well-established organizations.
Deadline: Deadlines vary by program. The deadline for Community Endowment large grants is April 1 and the deadline for Community Endowment small grants is October 1.
How to apply: Grant Proposal Cover Sheet and application guidelines are available here. Faxed or e-mailed proposals are not accepted. Organizations may not apply for a grant more than once in any 12-month period. The Foundation periodically offers Grantmaking Information Sessions for interested applicants. Giving range: The average gift for radio/television/media is approximately $35,000. The Foundation has made gifts as high as $450,000.
