Description: Established in 1968, the Foundation provides effective stewardship of philanthropic assets entrusted to its care by donors who wish to enhance the quality of community life. The Foundation offers several competitive grant opportunities.

The primary focus of the Foundation's competitive grantmaking is Strengthening Families-Strengthening Communities. This program includes grants to organizations working in the areas of community enrichment (including the arts), youth development, health, community development and nonprofit capacity-building.

Sample grants:

  • $15,000 to Commonwealth Public Broadcasting Corporation, Richmond, VA for MHZ Worldview Fund (2007).
  • $5,000 to Virginia Center for Public Press, WRIR Richmond Independent Radio, Richmond, VA for general support (2008).
  • $3,000 to NPR Foundation, Washington, DC for general support (2008).
  • $2,000 to Public Radio Partnership, Louisville, KY for general purposes of Public Radio Partnership (2007).
  • $1,500 to WJCT Public Broadcasting, Jacksonville, FL for staff educational purposes (2006).

Fit for public broadcasting: The Foundation has made 30 grants for public media projects over the past seven years, totaling $136,837. 

Eligibility: Proposals for competitive grants will be accepted from 501(c)(3) charitable organizations serving residents of Greater Richmond and/or the Tri-Cities(including Hopewell, Colonial Heights, and Petersburg, and Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico counties). No grants for annual campaigns, deficit financing, land acquisition or building funds. 

Deadline(s): May 5th and November 5th for letter of intent; January 5th and July 5th for proposals.

How to apply: For additional guidelines per grant type click here. Initial approach should be by letter of intent (no more than two pages). The Foundation will invite organizations to submit a full proposal based on their letter of intent. Faxed or e-mailed letters of intent are not accepted.

Giving range: Competitive Community Grants typically range from $5,000 – 100,000. The average gift for public media projects is approximately $5,000. The Foundation has made gifts as high as $3 million.
