DIGITIZING HISTORICAL RECORDS (DHR)

Digitizing Historical Records (DHR)

Grant: Digitizing Historical Records
Agency: The National Archives and Records Administration
Division: National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC)
Deadline: The deadline was June 11, 2013.

Description: The purpose of this program is to support projects that promote the preservation and use of America's documentary heritage essential to understanding our democracy, history, and culture.

Projects must demonstrate:

  • The national significance of the collections or records series to be digitized.
  • An effective work flow that repurposes existing descriptive material, rather than creating new metadata about the records.
  • Reasonable costs and standards for the project as well as sustainable preservation plans for the resulting digital records.
  • Well-designed plans that evaluate the use of the digitized materials and the effectiveness of the methods employed in digitizing and displaying the materials.

Fit for public broadcasting: NHPRC seeks proposals that use cost-effective methods to digitize nationally significant historical record collections and make the digital versions freely available online.

Eligibility: Nonprofits, institutions of higher education, state, and local governments and federally-acknowledged or state-recognized Native American tribes or groups are eligible to apply.

Anticipated funding: The NHPRC is expected to grant up to eight awards, each with a value of up to $150,000. A grant typically last one to three years. Cost sharing is required for this program. This can include both direct and indirect expenses, in-kind contributions, non-federal third party contributions and any income earned directly by the project. The NHPRC will provide up to 50 percent of the total project costs.

How to apply: Applications must be submitted electronically via Grants.gov. Online submission requires registration, a process that usually takes three to five business days but can take as long as four weeks. Be sure to visit Grants.gov and begin registering well in advance of the grant deadline.
